Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin Traffic Management.

Michael Bell

Question:

43 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if, in regard to his document, Action on Housing, he will outline when the standing committee comprising the Dublin Transportation Office, his Department, local authorities and public transport providers will be established to ensure integration of new housing development with proposed public transport infrastructure; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18644/00]

The integration of public transport with new housing development is central to securing sustainable high density development and maximising the return on available serviced land particularly in the Dublin area.

As part of the review of the DTI strategy and the DTO short to medium term action programmes which are currently under way, the DTO steering committee recently established a sub-committee to assess the transport projects and services necessary to facilitate key new housing developments proposed for Dublin city and county over the next six years. This sub-committee which comprises the Department of Public Enterprise and representatives from the Dublin local authorities as well as staff of the DTO have progressed their work in this area and made this available to my Department prior to the publication of Action on Housing.

It is intended that the committee, which is now being extended to include public transport providers, will continue its work in order to ensure that the current review of the DTO's programmes fully takes account of new housing requirements and that all future actions in this regard are driven and co-ordinated.
