Vol. 523 No. 3

Written Answers. - Criminal Prosecutions.

Alan Shatter

Question:

128 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of incidences in 1999 and in 2000 to date of firearms being stolen from the home of the registered owner; the type of firearms involved; and the number of prosecutions brought as a consequence of such an offence being committed. [20769/00]

I have been informed by the Garda Commissioner that the numbers of licensed firearms stolen in the years 1998 and 1999, the most recent years for which statistics are available, were 202 and 247 respectively. These figures include both rifles and shotguns. A breakdown of these figures as they relate to theft from the homes of licensed firearms holders is not available.

The number of prosecutions taken as a result of firearms being stolen from licensed holders is also not available.
