Vol. 523 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mental Health Services.

Noel Ahern

Question:

216 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health and Children if specific provision is made in his Department's allocation for the instruction and practice of music to persons in workshops and agencies charged with the care of persons with intellectual disability; if so, the amount and nature of training, the method or means of instruction that is carried out; if the relevant agencies expose such clients to music in this regard; if he will clarify the situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21599/00]

No specific provision is made by my Department for the instruction/practice of music in workshops or other day services provided for persons with an intellectual disability. It would be a matter for each service provider, in identifying the individual needs of the persons attending their services, to put together the various elements of the programmes required to meet those needs. Music therapy is however widely used within the services as part of a multi-sensory programme.
