Question:

317 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans he has to provide additional equipment and teachers for the information technology room at Drumshanbo vocational school in County Leitrim during the current school year. [21742/00]

A request was recently received from County Leitrim VEC for a grant to purchase computer equipment for the provision of additional post leaving certificate course-vocational training opportunities scheme places at Drumshanbo vocational school. The request is being considered currently and a decision will be conveyed to the chief executive officer of County Leitrim VEC in due course.

In the vocational sector the teacher allocation is done on a VEC scheme basis and it is a matter for the chief executive officer, with the agreement of the committee, to allocate teaching resources to individual schools in the scheme from within the approved teacher allocation.

My Department recently received an appeal from the chief executive officer of County Leitrim VEC for an additional teacher allocation to cater for an increase in enrolments at Drumshanbo vocational school. This appeal is currently under consideration.

The VEC and the Deputy will be notified of the decision on the appeal as soon as possible.
