Vol. 524 No. 1

Written Answers. - Driver Awareness Module.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

159 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the driver awareness module which was provided in ten schools in County Donegal as part of the Donegal inter-agency working groups strategy; if this module has been evaluated; the plans he has to extend such programmes to other schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21801/00]

I have been made aware that a driver awareness module was developed and launched in St. Eunan's College, Letterkenny in September 1998 as part of the transition year programme in that school. This is a driving awareness module and not a driving competency module. The module included visits from the gardaí and local driving instructors to the school for some six classes.

In conjunction with the North Western Health Board, the Garda Síochána and the County Council Roads Division, the module was further developed and taken up by nine more schools in Donegal in the last school year. An evaluation has been completed recently by the North Western Health Board. My Department has requested a copy of this evaluation.
