Vol. 524 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remedial Teaching Courses.

Beverley Flynn

Question:

160 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be considered for a place on the Department's remedial teaching course in County Galway in view of family circumstances. [21802/00]

A national programme of training is provided for primary and post-primary remedial, (learning support), teachers on postgraduate diploma courses in six centres, including the National University of Ireland, Galway and St. Angela's College of Education, Sligo.

Second level teachers who are timetabled for a minimum of ten hours per week may apply for admission to the courses. This timetabling of hours is necessary to provide opportunities for the course participants to apply the knowledge gained on the courses to classroom situations. Application is made directly to the institution providing the course.

As the applicant concerned is on leave of absence and is, therefore, not timetabled for a minimum of ten hours per week, the institutions concerned were not in a position to offer her a place on their courses this year.

As the courses are offered annually, it will be possible for those who meet the necessary criteria to apply for admission to courses next year or in subsequent years.
