Vol. 524 No. 2

Written Answers. - Organ Retention Inquiry.

Dan Neville

Question:

286 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children the current position regarding the inquiry set up to investigate the way in which the organs of children and adults were removed and retained without permission. [22144/00]

The Deputy will be aware that the inquiry in question will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will be chaired by Ms Anne Dunne, senior counsel who will present me with a report of the inquiry's findings within six months. On receipt of this report I will then table a motion that it be presented to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children. The committee on considering the report, will come to its own conclusions having regard to the terms of reference of the inquiry, holding a public hearing and calling witnesses as appropriate.

The Deputy will also be aware that Parents for Justice, the support group for parents and relatives affected by post-mortem examination practices and procedures, has resolved to afford the inquiry every co-operation and assistance.

Accommodation for the inquiry has been identified and plans for the necessary refurbishment works and equipping are advancing. The immediate legal staff requirement has been identified and recruited. The administrative staff requirement has also been identified and recruitment arrangements are in train.

I anticipate that the inquiry will be under way in the coming weeks.
