Vol. 524 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Ivan Yates

Question:

375 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans he has to conduct a further new competition for Garda recruitment in 2000; if so, when and the way in which it will be conducted; and the likely number of vacancies to be filled. [21901/00]

Last week the Government approved my proposals for a Garda recruitment competition later this year and the recruitment of 500 Garda trainees from that competition in the year 2001. This latest recruitment competition will fulfil the commitment in the Programme for Government to increase the strength of the force to 12,000.

Advertisements detailing the new competition for selection of Garda trainees appeared in the weekend newspapers and further advertisements will appear in the national papers during the week.

Recruitment to the Garda Síochána is by open competition conducted by the Civil Service Commission. The selection process includes a written reasoning ability test, a competitive interview and a medical examination.
