The area of new afforestation grant-aided by my Department in 1999 was 12,668 hectares. The figure for 1998 was 12,928 hectares. The percentages of broad leaf trees were 15.92% and 15.12%, respectively. However, these percentages only reflect the planted areas of commercial broad leaf trees and do not include broad leaf trees planted near rivers, roads and scenic areas, which amount to an additional 4% approximately of all grant-aided planting. In addition, the per hectare stocking level of broad leaf trees is 250% that of conifers. When these factors are taken into account, the target of 20% broad leaf tree planting set out in the strategic plan for forestry is being met.
The detailed information sought by the Deputy for the two years in question, that is, the breakdown per county of broad leaf tree and conifer planting, is contained in the tabular statement which will be circulated in the Official Report.
