Question:

139 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide a full response to Parliamentary Question No. 144 of 29 June 2000 in relation to legal actions involving his Department. [22563/00]

The information requested by the Deputy in Parliamentary Question No. 144 of 29 June 2000 is as follows. Since July 1999 a total of 275 legal actions have been entered into by my Department. Of this number, 235 are ongoing and 40 are completed. Of the 40 completed actions, 36 were successful and four were unsuccessful. The total cost of the 36 successful actions was £6.8 million. The numbers of barristers employed on these actions and the amounts paid to individual barristers are a matter for the Office of the Chief State Solicitor.
