Vol. 524 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Offences.

Richard Bruton

Question:

174 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the numbers of drivers prosecuted for exceeding the speed limits in built-up areas and on the open road in the past 12 months; and the classification of these drivers in each case by the amount of excess over the speed limit that applied in the area where they were stopped. [22429/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics relating to road traffic offences are collated on an annual basis and are published in the annual report of An Garda Síochána. The latest report available is for 1999 and copies were recently distributed to all Members of the Oireachtas.

I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the data sought by the Deputy in relation to the amount by which drivers exceed the speed limit is not readily available. It would require a considerable amount of Garda time to compile the information sought which, I hope the Deputy will appreciate, could not be justified.
