Vol. 524 No. 3

Written Answers. - Electronic Tagging.

Austin Currie

Question:

175 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the provisions that exist for electronic tagging; and the categories of people who may be tagged. [22430/00]

The expert group on the probation and welfare service which published its final report in August 1999, did not recommend the introduction of electronic tagging in Ireland at this stage. Given the limitations of the technology in relation to electronic tagging and the continuing development of more sophisticated mechanisms of monitoring, the group recommended awaiting the introduction of third generation systems and continued monitoring of the extension of the existing systems in Europe and elsewhere.

I endorse the recommendation of the expert group. My Department will continue to monitor the continuing development of more sophisticated mechanisms for electronic tagging.
