Question:

134 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of cars, without tax or insurance, that have been impounded in 2000 in Dublin; if he will give details of the storage space available to hold cars without tax and insurance; his views on whether this situation is satisfactory; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22811/00]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the provisions of Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act, 1994 have been implemented with considerable success in the Dublin Metropolitan Region, DMR, in the year 2000 to date.

I am further informed, by the Garda authorities, that the total number of cars which have been impounded in Dublin, without tax and insurance, in the year 2000 to date is set out in the following tabular statement.

I understand that vehicles seized are removed to compounds at Infirmary Road and to Santry Garda station. Finally, I can inform the Deputy that the issue of further storage capacity is currently being considered by the Garda.
