Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - Driving Licences.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

379 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the changes which have been made by his Department or the European Union in relation to the allocating of category C and category D driving licences; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23019/00]

The Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 1999, updated and consolidated the Irish driver licensing regime in line with the requirements of EU directives on driving licences. The principal change in relation to the granting of driving licences with categories C and D entitlement related to the introduction of a requirement for the holders of such licences to undergo periodic medical examination for licence renewal purposes. Changes were also made to the general standards of physical and mental fitness required to be met in order for licences to be issued. In addition, eligibility for a provisional licence for category C1 was made dependent on the applicant holding a driving licence in category B.
