Vol. 524 No. 6

Written Answers. - Live Exports.

Question:

150 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if Directive 97/78/EC has been transposed into national legislation and implemented for meat products and for live animals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23415/00]

Council Directive 97/78/EC of 18 December 1997 which lays down the principles governing the organisation of veterinary checks on products entering the Community from third countries was transposed into national legislation under the European Communities (Veterinary Checks on Products from Third Countries) Regulations, 2000 ( S.I. No. 292 of 2000 ) in so far as it refers to non-fishery products. The Department of the Marine and Natural Resources is drafting the appropriate legislation with regard to fishery products.

With regard to imports of live animals from third countries, the provisions of the European Communities (Importation of Animals and Animal Products from Third Countries) Regulations, 1994 ( S. I. No. 255 of 1994 ) apply.

Question No. 151 taken with Question No. 115.
