Vol. 524 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cattle Identification System.

Brendan Daly

Question:

152 Mr. Daly asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he has satisfied himself with the level of co-operation being provided by farmers, livestock marts and processors in meeting their respective commitments in the CMMS system for cattle traceability; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23388/00]

I am satisfied the vast majority of participants are co-operating with the CMMS and that the system is operating satisfactorily.

The CMMS is of course a newly developed database and systems and procedures are being continuously monitored and updated. There are on-going contacts with all participants to ensure that commitments are being met and that accurate data are submitted. The continued co-operation of all parties is critical for the success of the CMMS.

To ensure that there is an accurate and up to date record on CMMS of the current cattle population, my Department proposes to conduct a herd reconciliation exercise or mini census to confirm the location of these animals as at 31 December, 2000. Co-operation with this exercise will facilitate the greater use of CMMS both for traceability purposes and also in establishing entitlement to EU premia.
