Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

253 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will detail, from the time of the present Dáil, the financial penalties imposed on the Government resulting from the failure of his Department to comply with EU directives; and the legal proceedings that are now pending by the EU as a result of the failure of his Department to comply with EU directives. [24133/00]

There have been no financial penalties imposed on the Government resulting from the failure of my Department to comply with EU directives.

In February 2000, a reasoned opinion of the Commission was addressed to Ireland, relating to Ireland's failure to notify the Commission of measures to implement Commission Directive 98/45/EC of 24 March 1998, amending Directive 91/67/EC, concerning the animal health conditions governing the placing on the market of aquaculture animals and products. The required draft regulations have been submitted for my signature and I expect that the matter will be finalised shortly.
