Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Drug Abuse.

Ulick Burke

Question:

464 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Health and Children the estimated number of heroin addicts in County Galway; the number who are currently being treated at Western Health Board facilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24099/00]

Because of the illicit nature of drug abuse it is not possible to give the number of heroin addicts in any one area.

I have been informed by the Western Health Board that its drug development service is currently seeing three people from Galway city and county with heroin related problems. One person is being supported in a drug rehabilitation unit. A second person is being supported on a methadone detoxification programme and a third person is being seen for counselling and support.
