Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Heroin Addiction Treatment.

Dan Neville

Question:

533 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children the number on the waiting lists for treatment of heroin addiction in community based treatment centres. [24398/00]

Heroin addiction is concentrated mainly in the greater Dublin region which is administered by three area health boards under the aegis of the Eastern Regional Health Authority. I understand that the number of people on waiting lists for treatment for heroin addiction in community based treatment centres in the area at the end of September 2000, was 458. The number of treatment places has increased by 427 in 2000.

With regard to community based treatment centres in the rest of the country there are currently seven people on the waiting list for treatment in the South Eastern Health Board area and seven people awaiting treatment in the Midland Health Board area.
