Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Denis Naughten

Question:

701 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when he will complete a programme for road safety research; the estimated budget for such a research programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24765/00]

The Government Strategy for Road Safety 1998-2002 envisaged, in relation to road safety research: the continued analysis and compilation by the National Roads Authority, NRA, of road accident data, according to a standardised international format; new national surveys by NRA on seat belt wearing and traffic speeds; continued work by NRA on road safety audits and checks; and a programme of research by the Medical Bureau of Road Safety into drugs and driving.

All these projects have been mobilised and-or completed. In addition, both NRA and the National Safety Council have been involved in researching public attitudes to road safety. The cost of the above activities is being ascertained and this information will be forwarded to the Deputy.

Question:

707 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of locations where low cost remedial measures have been completed as outlined in the document, the Road to Safety; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24774/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 702 and 707 together.

The 2000 non-national road grant allocations included a new funding provision of some £680,000 to enable low cost safety improvement works on non-national roads to be carried out by local authorities. In March 2000 local authorities were requested to submit proposals under this scheme in consultation with the National Roads Authority.
Some 175 schemes were forwarded to the Department for funding totalling £2.8 million, 59 schemes were selected for funding this year totalling £685,581. Work on the selected schemes is progressing.
Questions Nos. 703, 704 and 705 taken with Question No. 699.
