Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Michael Creed

Question:

837 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a fourth teacher on a temporary basis, to a school (details supplied) in County Cork as the enrolment on 30 September, 2000 justify this appointment. [23928/00]

The staffing of a primary school for a particular year is determined by reference to the number of pupils enrolled in the school on 30 September of the previous year. The actual number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule. The staffing schedule is determined for a particular year following discussions with the managerial authorities and the INTO.

The current staffing of this particular school is a principal and two mainstream class teachers based on an enrolment of 77 as at 30 September 1999. This is the authorised staffing for the school. The school also has the services of a shared learning support teacher.

The enrolment of the school as at 30 September 2000 determines the staffing for the 2001-02 school year. Unfortunately, I am not in a position to sanction the appointment of a fourth teacher for this school for the 2000-2001 school year.
