Written Answers. - Drinks Industry.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

189 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health and Children if in regard to the commitment he gave in a newspaper interview (details supplied) he has raised with the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform the practice of certain pubs and night clubs offering young people cheap alcoholic drinks on certain nights of the week, particularly having regard to the health implications of excessive drinking by young people; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24548/00]

I have had preliminary discussions with the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform in relation to this issue. In the meantime, the health promotion unit – HPU – of my Department is continuing to work with those involved in the drinks industry regarding the responsible serving of alcohol. The HPU has also commenced the initial planning phase of an alcohol awareness campaign which should be launched in February next year.

Question No. 190 taken with Question No. 185.
