Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Traffic Accidents.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

108 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the total number of drivers of vehicles killed in traffic accidents in each of the past five years; the number who held full licences and held provisional licences in each year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24752/00]

Statistics regarding the total number of drivers of vehicles killed in traffic accidents and other such data, are published by the National Roads Authority in its annual Road Accident Facts Reports. The reports, which are compiled from information supplied by the Garda Síochána, show that the number of drivers killed in each of the five years for which information is available is, 1994, 202; 1995, 229; 1996, 247; 1997, 231; and 1998, 234. Copies of these reports are available in the Oireachtas Library.

Reliable information is not available regarding the driver licence status of drivers who die in acci dents. However, an analysis of the involvement of provisional driving licence holders in road accidents has been carried out by the National Roads Authority, NRA, in the report Young Driver Accidents 1997, a copy of which is in the Oireachtas Library.
