Vol. 525 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Accidents.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

293 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of fatal road traffic accidents for each of the years 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and to date in 2000. [25529/00]

Statistics regarding the number of fatal road traffic accidents and other such data are published by the National Roads Authority in its annual Road Accident Facts reports. The reports, which are compiled from information supplied by the Garda Síochána, show that the number of fatal road accidents in each past three is: 1996, 415, 1997, 424 and 1998, 408. Copies of these reports are available in the Oireachtas library.

Some 374 fatal accidents occurred in 1999. At 13 November 2000, some 354 road deaths had occurred this year, a decrease of 16 on the corresponding figure for 1999. The number of fatal road accidents in the current year has not yet been definitively analysed.
