Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

385 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the classroom assistant of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 9 is not proficient in Irish sign language which is the only means of communication for this person; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that no psychological, behavioural or occupational therapy is available for him; when these services will be provided in order that this person can avail of education to his fullest potential; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The difficulties to which the Deputy refers have not previously been brought to my attention.

I have asked my Department's inspectorate to investigate the needs of the child in question with particular reference to the need for training in Irish sign language for staff employed in catering for the child in the school.

The school referred to by the Deputy has the support of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, under the auspices of the relevant health board. I have asked my officials to raise the Deputy's concerns with the health board.
