Vol. 526 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drink Prices Order.

Michael Bell

Question:

141 Mr. Bell asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of inspections of licensed premises carried out to monitor compliance with terms of the recent drink prices order; the number of prosecutions that have taken place in 2000 to date; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26557/00]

I am informed by the Director of Consumer Affairs, who enforces this Order, that her inspectorate has visited approximately 2,000 licensed premises since the introduction of the order and that approximately 500 have been visited a second time. The director intends that this work will be ongoing right over Christmas into the New Year.

According to my information from the director, legal proceedings have been initiated to date against one licensed premises and are scheduled to come before the courts on 8 December 2000. I understand that the director is considering the legal position in relation to several other cases.
