Question:

301 Mr. O'Flynn asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the percentage of road traffic fatalities during 1999 which occurred on a national primary or secondary route, N-prefix road or at the junction with such a road. [27243/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 300 and 301 together.

Statistics on road traffic accidents, which are compiled from information supplied by the Garda Síochána, are published by the National Roads Authority in its annual road accident facts reports. The most recent such report is in respect of 1998 and is available in the Oireachtas Library.

Provisional data for 1999 shows that 122 people were killed in that year in road accidents between the hours of 11 p.m and 7 a.m. The licensing status of drivers involved in these accidents is not recorded. Some 44% of all fatal accidents in 1999 occurred on national roads, an increase of 1% on 1998. Some 30% of all fatal accidents occurred in urban areas, a decrease of 3% on the previous year. The number of fatal accidents in rural areas increased by 3% on the 1998 figure and accounted for 70% of all fatal accidents in 1999. Specific analysis has not been made of fatal accidents at junctions with national primary, secondary routes or N-prefix roads.
