Vol. 526 No. 6

Written Answers. - Registration of Architects.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

318 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he intends to introduce a registration system for architects in view of the fact that the Government accepted this recommendation from the forum for the construction industry some time ago; the probable timescale for introducing a registration system; and if this can be effected by statutory instrument or if it will require new legislation. [27463/00]

The Report of the Strategic Review Committee on the Construction Industry recommended that the title of "Architect" be protected by legislation. The Forum for the Construction Industry, FCI, has submitted relevant detailed proposals in partnership with representatives of the various architectural bodies.

I hope to submit proposals for the registration of architects to the Government before the end of the year, and, subject to Government approval, to introduce the relevant Bill in mid-2001. The details of the proposed registration system would be incorporated in regulations to be made under the Bill when enacted.
