Vol. 527 No. 2

Written Answers. - Credit Unions.

Michael Noonan

Question:

103 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Finance if he has reached agreement with the Irish League of Credit Unions on the exemption from tax of certain dividends and interest paid on deposits; the commitments he has made to the Irish League of Credit Unions; if any new tax arrangements which apply to savings in credit unions will apply also to savings in other financial institutions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28134/00]

As I indicated in replying to previous questions on this matter, I met the Irish League of Credit Unions on both 3 and 6 October 2000, to discuss the taxation arrangements for credit unions. At the meeting of 6 October, it was agreed that these discussions could form the basis for an agreement for new taxation arrangements for the credit union movement. The Irish League of Credit Unions has since been consulting its members on this issue. I have received a response from the league and I am considering the matter in the context of the budget. I cannot comment further on the matter at this stage.
