Vol. 527 No. 4

Written Answers. - European Centre for Autism Research.

John McGuinness

Question:

136 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide finance directly from his Department to establish a European centre of excellence for research and the care of people with autism at Myshall, County Carlow; if he will begin negotiations with the Departments of Finance and Justice, Equality and Law Reform to seek agreement for such a centre; and his views on whether the Myshall property is an ideal location for the treatment and care of people with autism. [28820/00]

With reference to the property mentioned by the Deputy, the initial intention was that it would be used by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform on a short-term basis with the South Eastern Health Board having first option on its subsequent use. Officials from my Department are currently in contact with the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the Office of Public Works concerning the use of the property. I have also been in touch with my colleague, Deputy Cullen, Minister of State, who considers that there can be some flexibility in relation to the issue and is working to this end.

The suitability of the property for treatment and care of people with autism would be a matter for assessment by the South Eastern Health Board. I will keep the Deputy informed of developments in regard to this matter.
