Question:

164 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress to date with regard to the provision of extra facilities at Naas General Hospital, Naas, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29139/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 163 and 164 together.

I have made inquiries into the matter raised by the Deputy and I understand that phase two of the development at Naas General Hospital commenced on site in November 1999. Funding for the development is provided for under the national development plan. I have been informed that the project is eight weeks behind programme due primarily to the unavailability of an adequate number of site operatives to maintain progress in accordance with the programme. Phase two is programmed for completion in two stages. Stage one, the major element of phase two, is programmed for completion in November 2001 and stage two is programmed for completion in July 2002.

The total number of beds at Naas General Hospital is 124. Of these 124 beds, 94 are in-patient beds formally approved under Article 8 of the Health Services (In-Patient) Regulations, 1991, and 30 are located in the psychiatric unit which was provided under phase 1 of the development.
Prior to the commencement of phase 2 of the development the hospital provided the following facilities:
Entrance
Out Patients Department
Physical Medical Department
Pharmacy Department
Operating Department
Intensive Care and Coronary Care
Administration/medical records
Accident and Emergency Department
Radiology Department
Geriatric Day Hospital
Day services – Endoscopy
In-patient beds
Observation BedsChaplaincy Department
Autopsy-Mortuary Department
Acute psychiatric beds
Pathology
On completion of the development Naas General Hospital will have a total bed capacity of 189 beds, including 25 day beds and 30 beds in psychiatric unit provided under phase 1 of the development at the hospital. The phase 2 development includes the following in new accommodation:
Main Entrance Concourse
Out Patients Department
Physical Medicine Department
Pharmacy Department
Operating Department
Intensive care and coronary care units
Geriatric Rehabilitation/assessment ward
Administration/Medical Records Department
Accident and Emergency Department
Radiology Department
Geriatric Day Hospital
Day Services Department
In Patient Wards
Chaplaincy Department.
Phase 2 of this development also provides for the alteration and refurbishment of the mortuary-post mortem department in existing accommodation.
Following approval to phase 3 of the hospital development under the national development plan, I recently approved the appointment of the existing design team to examine the option of carrying out and completing phases 2 and 3 as a single building contract. Phase 3 of the development, which will complete the hospital in accordance with the development brief, includes the following new accommodation:
Sterile Supply Department
Engineering Maintenance Department
Catering and Staff Dining Department
Central Supplies Department
On-call Staff Accommodation
Central Staff Changing
Additional Accommodation to OPD
Additional Accommodation to Administration
Department
Additional Accommodation to Day Services Department
Pathology Department
The designation of hospital beds into medical, surgical or other categories is a matter for the management of the hospital concerned and is subject to service demand.
I am confident that when the development is complete, Naas General Hospital will be in a position to provide an enhanced level of care to its catchment area.
Question No. 165 taken with Question No. 14.
