Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Electricity Power Pylons.

Denis Naughten

Question:

249 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Health and Children the health implications which arise from electricity power pylons; the plans he has to initiate research in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29604/00]

A considerable volume of research has been carried out internationally over the years into possible adverse health effects from electromagnetic fields, EMF, surrounding power lines. The research has not substantiated a definite link between exposure to electromagnetic fields and ill health. Further research is ongoing involving the World Health Organisation and at EU level. The international EMF project was established by the WHO in 1996. In collaboration with international agencies and organisations, the WHO is pooling resources and knowledge concerning effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields and trying to identify gaps in knowledge in this area. This includes recommending better focused research programmes that allow better health risk assessments to be made and updating critical reviews of scientific literature. The WHO is working towards an international consensus and resolution on the health concerns. I have no plans to initiate research in this area.

Medical officers in my Department keep informed of any significant developments in this area in regard to human health concerns. Should evidence emerge of any significant risk to public health, I would seek to have remedial measures put in place by the appropriate Departments and agencies.
