Vol. 528 No. 2

Written Answers. - National Community Games.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

214 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the location where the Community games will take place in 2001 in view of the recent decision concerning Mosney Camp, County Meath. [30085/00]

While I have no official responsibility regarding the location of the 2001 community games, nevertheless, it is a matter in which I have an interest.

Last week, my colleague, the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy O'Donoghue met representatives of the National Community Games to discuss the possibility of accommodating the games at Mosney. Officials from my Department were also present.
It was agreed that the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the directorate of asylum support services will do all in their power to facilitate the community games movement in whatever way possible, with a view to the ESB Community Games taking place in the Mosney holiday centre next year. It was also agreed that immediate discussions would take place between officers of the community games and officials of the directorate to work out all the necessary details.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

215 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the amount of Government funds that have been provided for the National Community Games in each of the past five years; if he has satisfied himself that the community games are a worthwhile initiative; if so, his views on whether sufficient financial recognition is being given to this group; and if he will make a statement on the threatened withdrawal of Mosney Camp, County Meath from the community games. [30104/00]

Details of the grants provided by my Department for the National Community Games from 1995 to 1999 are given on the attached table following table. With the establishment of the Irish Sports Council on a statutory basis in July 1999, responsibility for funding national sports bodies, including the community games movement, passed to the council.
