Question:

338 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence the number of occasions on which viruses occurred in incoming e-mails in his Department in the past 12 months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2539/01]

The Department of Defence has an Internet firewall, running the current version of a leading anti-virus product. This system detected and eradicated computer viruses in e-mails which had Microsoft Word documents attached on seven separate occasions in the last 12 months. The Department uses the Lotus Smartsuite groupware product and has received no viruses on this platform.

339 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence the number of occasions on which hackers have attempted to breach his Department's e-mail security in the past 12 months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2554/01]

The Department of Defence has no record of any attempt to breach its e-mail system in the last 12 months or on any previous occasion.
