Question:

543 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Health and Children the efforts his Department is making to alleviate the overcrowding problems at Naas General Hospital, Naas, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1107/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 541, 542 and 543 together.

I am aware that Naas General Hospital has encountered an increase in its workload in recent years and in this regard a major capital development is under way at the hospital. Phase two of the development of the hospital commenced on site in November 1999 and is programmed for completion in July 2002. Funding for the development is provided for under the national development plan. The total cost of phase two will be of the order of £45.5 million at current estimates. On completion of phase two, the hospital will have a total of 189 beds, including 25 day beds and 30 beds in the psychiatric unit provided under phase one. Phase two includes the following new accommodation:

Main Entrance Concourse

Administration/Medical Records Department

Out Patients Department

Accident and Emergency Department

Physical Medicine Department

Radiology Department

Pharmacy Department

Geriatric Day Hospital

Operating Department

Day Services Department

Intensive Care and Coronary Care Units

In Patients Wards

Geriatric Rehabilitation/Assessment Ward

Chaplaincy Department

Funding for the phase three development of the hospital will also be provided. My Department, in consultation with the Eastern Regional Health Authority, is examining the detailed planning implications involved for this further development. It is envisaged that it will include, inter alia, facilities such as pathology, hospital sterile supplies department, central supplies department, catering department, engineering/maintenance department and mortuary and post mortem facilities.
