Question:

743 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of Irish non-consultant hospital doctors in the hospital system in each of the past years 1999, 2000 and at present in 2001. [2457/01]

The only statistical breakdown for the number of Irish nationals employed as NCHDs in the public health service is provided by the Postgraduate Medical and Dental Board, in a report that is issued every two years. The figure on 1 October, 1998, was 1,706 and the figure on 1 October, 2000, was 1,741. These figures do not include the third-year trainee posts in the general practice vocational training schemes.
