Vol. 529 No. 3

Written Answers. - Physical Education.

John Perry

Question:

75 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the surveys that have been carried out in regard to physical education in primary and secondary schools here; if physical education is taught in all schools; the assessments that have been carried out on estimates of physical fitness levels of primary and secondary school pupils; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2708/01]

While comprehensive national surveys of physical fitness levels of primary and post-primary pupils have not been carried out, small scale surveys have been funded by the Department of Education and Science through its former sports section and through its research and development committee.

These surveys were largely conducted as postgraduate research studies in various third level colleges and universities. Consequently, while the findings are available, they are, for the most part, unpublished. An example of such a survey is "Socialisation of the Primary School Child into a Physically Active Lifestyle" by Dr. Sylvia O Sullivan of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.
