Vol. 530 No. 2

Written Answers. - Beef Destruction Scheme.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

71 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of cattle which have been included in the destruction scheme each week from 1 January 2001 to date; if he has satisfied himself that this is sufficient; if he has met his targets in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3425/01]

The numbers of animals slaughtered each week under the purchase for destruction scheme since 1 January 2001 were as follows:

Week commencing

Number

1 January 2001

8 January 2001

4,158

15 January 2001

11,816

22 January 2001

10,888

29 January 2001

14,570

Total

41,432

Having regard to the physical limitations on the operation of the scheme in Ireland, as well as the detailed controls required under EU Regulation 2777/2000 governing the scheme and the need to make maximum use of commercial outlets, I am satisfied that the throughput, to date, under the scheme has been appropriate.
