Vol. 530 No. 2

Written Answers. - Financial Contributions.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

77 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the reason contributions paid by employers in respect of a substantial number of employees in various firms have not been recorded to facilitate qualification for various benefits; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3498/01]

Employers account for PAYE-PRSI deducted from their employees and for the employer's share of PRSI on an annual return to the Revenue Commissioners. This information is also of crucial importance to the Department of Social Community and Family Affairs as it determines the entitlements of employees to social welfare benefits.

I have been informed by the Revenue Commissioners that there was a delay in updating the social insurance records of the individuals to whom the Deputy refers. The delay arose because the employers in question encountered software difficulties last year with a particular payroll system which they each used. The employers were contacted by Revenue and allowed some time to correct the problem. The relevant information was received in January and is now being processed.
