Vol. 530 No. 2

Written Answers. - Psychological and Speech Therapy Services.

Michael Creed

Question:

82 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the inadequate speech therapy and psychological assessment service available at a school (details supplied) in County Cork; and the proposals he has to rectify this matter. [3456/01]

The information sought by the Deputy in relation to the provision of speech therapy and psychological assessment at St. Mary's school, Rochestown, Cork, is not readily available to my Department. I have asked the Southern Health Board for the information and I will forward it to the Deputy when it becomes available to me.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

83 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children if there has been any improvement since 1 January 2001 in staffing levels in the speech and language therapy department of the South Eastern Health Board for the Waterford constituency; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3393/01]

The provision of specialised health and personal social services, including speech and language therapy, is a matter for the relevant health board. Accordingly, the Deputy's question has been referred to the chief executive officer of the South Eastern Health Board, with a request that he examine the matter and reply directly to the Deputy, as a matter of urgency.

I am aware that there are staff shortages in the therapy grades in the Health Service. In order to address these shortages my Department has engaged Dr. Peter Bacon and Associates to undertake a work force planning study to report on the prospective supply and demand for a number of therapy grades, including speech and language therapists. This report is expected within the coming weeks.
