Vol. 530 No. 3

Written Answers. - Firearms Licence.

Michael Ring

Question:

235 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform whether it is necessary for licence holders to provide adequate security for the stores of firearms; if so, when this was introduced; the guidelines/regulations for same; if action has been taken against anybody for non-compliance with the regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3568/01]

The Garda Commissioner introduced new firearm storage requirements on 15 March 2000. The Garda authorities have informed me that no action has been taken against any person for non-compliance with these requirements. I have also been informed by the Garda authorities that the requirements are being challenged in the High Court by way of judicial review. In the circumstances, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further.
