Vol. 530 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

Question:

148 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the total moneys remitted to local authorities for commercial and domestic rates, service charges and all other levies to local authorities. [4166/01]

The total estimated income of local authorities from various sources is set out in the annual local authority Estimates volumes, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. In 2000, local authority income from commercial rates and from fees/charges in respect of the provision of goods and services was estimated at £456.4 million and £505.3 million respectively. Domestic rates were abolished in 1978. As regards services charges, domestic refuse charges account for £18.8 million of the £505.3 million amount and domestic water charges account for approximately £2 million. As domestic water charges were abolished with effect from 1 January 1997 this amount represents arrears of charges due.
