Vol. 530 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Service Vehicle Inspectors.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

169 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that public service vehicle inspectors are concerned about their conditions of employment, particularly in relation to pay and other ancillary benefits; if he is planning to transfer most of their work to the national car testing scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4176/01]

There is a claim for an increase in the public service vehicle inspectors allowance before the Garda conciliation council which was established under the Garda Síochána conciliation and arbitration scheme. The proceedings of the council are confidential and it would not be appropriate for me to comment further on the matter.

There are no plans for the transfer of the work of public service inspectors. The role of public service vehicle inspectors is one of many Garda roles being reviewed as part of an organisational structure review under the Garda strategic management initiative. This review will continue until autumn 2001 when any recommendations for change will be considered by the Garda SMI steering group.
