Vol. 530 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Monuments.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

146 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the position in relation to the reopening of a building (details supplied) in County Donegal; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4334/01]

While the site is not closed to the public at present it will be necessary for my Department to undertake essential remedial works to repair damage which resulted from vandalism to the monument in early January. This necessary work will be carried out during the period 5 March to 31 May 2001. For health and safety reasons it will be necessary for the duration of these remedial works to limit access to the site and to this end my Department has applied to Donegal County Council for temporary closure of the access road to the site for the period of the works.

Conscious that the site is an important one, my Department will ensure that access to the monument is maintained for visitors from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., Monday to Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, special arrangements will be made to ensure access to the site over St. Patrick's weekend and during Easter.
