Vol. 530 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Richard Bruton

Question:

166 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will take steps to ensure a school (details supplied) in Dublin 9 does not lose its 14th classroom teacher for 2001-02, in view of the fact that the loss of the 15th teacher in 2000 resulted in the amalgamation of fifth and sixth class and further amalgamation would result in the loss of a teacher. [4343/01]

The staffing of a primary school for a particular year is determined by reference to the number of pupils enrolled in the school on 30 September of the previous year. The actual number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule. The staffing schedule is determined for a particular year following discussions with the managerial authorities and the INTO.

The current staffing of this particular school is a principal and 14 mainstream class teachers based on an enrolment of 413 as at 30 September 1999. The school also has the services of a remedial teacher. The enrolment as at 30 September 2000, on which the staffing for the 2001-2002 school year will be based, was 371.

However, as the staffing schedule for the 2001-2002 has not yet been finalised, the retention or otherwise of the fourteenth teaching post cannot be determined at this stage.
