Richard Bruton

Question:

229 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children if a special review of the income guidelines for a medical card has recently been commissioned; if this review has been com pleted; the recommendations made; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4577/01]

In keeping with the commitment under the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness, the health board chief executive officers are examining the operations of the medical card scheme in consultation with the social partners. Particular emphasis is to be placed on the needs of families with children and on removing anomalies and barriers to take up, including informational deficits. The health board chief executive officers have indicated the review will be concluded by mid-year. I understand that the area of income guidelines for medical cards will form part of the review.
