Vol. 530 No. 6

Written Answers. - Hospital Doctors.

Bernard Allen

Question:

252 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make a statement on recent press reports in a newspaper (details supplied) that the recent Government backed recruitment drive in India and Pakistan is in danger of collapse due to funding difficulties and failure to date to meet Medical Council regulations. [4766/01]

The recruitment drive in India and Pakistan for anaesthetic non-consultant hospital doctors has been a major success. These doctors have been taking up positions in hospitals since the beginning of January. As part of the follow-up to their employment, a number of issues have arisen in relation to, for example, registration with the Medical Council and the re-allocation of funding. Most of the issues which have arisen have been dealt with and those remaining are being resolved.
