Written Answers. - Family Friendly Work Practices.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

383 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the way in which his Department intends to mark the Family Friendly Workplace Day on 1 March 2001; the initiatives he has in this area; and the way in which family friendly initiatives are being implemented for the staff in his Department. [4723/01]

I very much welcome the important initiative being taken by the Equality Authority and the national framework committee for the development of family friendly policies in organising Family Friendly Workplace Day.

My Department has circulated all staff with a copy of the circular prepared by the equality unit of the Department of Finance announcing the day and listing Civil Service family friendly working values and Family Friendly Workplace Day posters have been placed on notice boards in the Department.

The wide range of family friendly arrangements which have been introduced throughout the Civil Service are made available to staff in my Department in accordance with the relevant rules and conditions applying. These include the following:

Flexitime

flexible working hours

Job-sharing

part-time working

Term time leave

leave during the summer holiday period

Career breaks

breaks of between six months and five years

Paternity leave

three days special leave with pay. My Department is currently in the process of developing a human resources strategy which will appropriately reflect the Government's commitment to family friendly policies consistent with the achievement of the Department's strategic objectives.
