Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Alan Shatter

Question:

138 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction the provision of additional permanent classrooms for Knocklyon primary school, Dublin 16; the reason for the delay in the sanctioning of the preparation of the appropriate plans; and when the outstanding remedial works on the existing school building will be undertaken. [6381/01]

My Department has carried out an assessment of the long-term enrolment projections for the area and has completed a technical examination of the two primary schools at Knocklyon. An accommodation brief is being prepared and, when this is finalised, my Department will be in contact with the school authorities. In the meantime, my Department's building unit has advised the school authorities to appoint an architect to oversee essential refurbishment works to the junior school.

Owing to the large number of applications to my Department for grant aid in respect of capital works, delays in the processing of individual projects are inevitable. However, I assure the Deputy that every effort is being made to progress the matter.
