Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Bribery Allegations.

Liz McManus

Question:

22 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position in the investigation being held into allegations of bribery involving members of An Garda Síochána in Dublin, especially in regard to drink driving offences; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6146/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that following the arrest of a member of An Garda Síochána from the Dublin metropolitan region south division on 23 December 2000 under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1906 as amended by the Ethics in Public Office Act, 1995, the same member was arrested again on 14 February 2001 in relation to the investigation of a possible second similar offence.

I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the investigation into both these cases is ongoing and a file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as soon as possible.

Also, I understand that the member in question is under suspension and an internal Garda disciplinary inquiry has commenced. The Deputy will appreciate that as the matter is under investigation it would be inappropriate for me to comment further.
